English for Education A-level Preparation Course held at Wellington School, Somerset 10 July – 3 September 2006
Course Report for: (真实姓名隐去), Julia
General: The Etherton Education A-level Preparation Course at Wellington School is an intensive, eight-week academic summer course designed to give overseas students the best possible preparation before they commence their A-levels in Britain. Students study General and Social English, English for Academic Purposes, English through Drama and choose from a range of other subjects including Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics/Business Studies, Geography, Psychology and Art. We also introduce western manners, over twelve different sports, a wide range of social activities and eight main cultural visits, as well as Sunday clubs. British Teachers and British Student Hosts run the programme, which has an overall staff-student ratio below 1:3. The main purpose of the course is to produce students who are confident and relaxed in British Boarding Schools.
A note on the content of this report: In each section of the report the first part outlines the work covered in class by all the students and the second part comments on the individual student. Each student also receives overall grades for effort and attainment.

They were able to experiment with a range of media including pencil, fine line pen, charcoal, wax crayons and ink. In their sketchbooks pupils researched fruit, flowers and plants working both from first hand observation and printed images. Pupils were then introduced to “Art Nouveau” and asked to focus on one artist of their choice linked to this style of art. They were encouraged to make critical responses in their sketchbooks. This was followed by design work inspired by their initial drawings and their chosen artist and led to the completion of a final collage. All students took part in an Art Exhibition at the end of term.Individual Report:Effort: A, A Attainment: A, AJulia has worked with enthusiasm and motivation throughout the eight weeks. She is clearly committed to the subject and works with great care and consideration. She has good drawing skills and has produced some inventive and imaginative design work. She should make an excellent candidate for A Level Art.Drama Miss Zoe Markham BA(Hons), PGCEMr Matthew Burke BA, TESLDuring the course of the class we did a number of things. First, we learned the basics of Drama – i.e. what is Drama, what makes a good actor/actress, rules to follow, things to know etc. Second, we did numerous activities, games, icebreakers etc. This experience gave the students much needed practice and an introduction to Drama, while keeping it in a fun atmosphere as it gave them self-confidence and enhanced and toned their acting skills. Third, we started rehearsing and preparing for the performance of “Grease”.Individual Report:Effort: A, A Attainment: A, AJulia is an amazing student. It has been a great pleasure to teach her. Her self-confidence in her English level certainly found their way into Drama. Julia was always eager and willing to take part in activities during class time. With a perfect attendance in class and rehearsal time Julia has clearly gone above and beyond my expectations for this course.English Mr Henry Wilson Cert TESOLThere have been two main purposes to the English lessons that I have taught. Although an effort has been made to try and cover both purposes in one lesson topic this has not always been possible due to the differences in subject matter. The first aim was to prepare the students for the IELTS examination, which they may be taking in the future. This embraces the four papers – Speaking, Listening, Academic Writing and Academic Reading. We have covered the techniques required to achieve successful marks when the time comes. I have stressed the need to develop and practice the strategies outlined in the text book we used – Focus on IELTS by Sue O’Connell – and to continue with them throughout their English studies. The second, and equally important, purpose was to prepare the students for their studies at the English schools that they will be graduating to in the autumn. We have naturally concentrated on the aspects of the English language and vocabulary with which they may be unfamiliar and in this respect we have spent time developing their awareness of collocations, phrasal verbs, synonyms and common colloquialisms. I have tried to use material which gives an insight into life in the United Kingdom and this has involved using texts covering such diverse subjects as Elvis Presley, William Shakespeare, MTV, the Titanic and the Gunpowder Plot. The class has generally been polite, industrious and keen to learn. I hope that they will enjoy life at their new schools.Individual Report:Effort: B, B Attainment: A, BJulia has a sensible and intelligent attitude to her work and has been keen to learn. Her written work has always been well presented and punctual and her contributions to classroom work have been constructive and well considered. She has a good grasp of all the different aspects of the English language and applies them well. Her interest in English literature will enable her to benefit from the opportunities afforded to her at her new school.MathematicsMr Stuart Gifford BSc, PGCEPre-‘A’- Level MathematicsIn this course we have studied : number work from integers to rational and irrational numbers and computational aspects involving fractions, decimals and percentages; statistical topics including averages, frequencies and cumulative frequencies, time series and moving averages, correlation, variance and standard deviation;probability;geometry and trigonometry;graphical work and vectors;some aspects of differentiation.Individual Report: Effort: A, A Attainment: A-, A-Julia has contributed well in class and has worked hard to achieve a high level of understanding of the topics studied. She has the potential to do well at ‘A’ Level.PhysicsMr Christopher Lennox-Hilton BSc(Hons), AKC, PGCEDr Paul Owen MA, PhDPhysics lessons have focused on developing practical and investigative skills and on improving students’ grasp of technical vocabulary. This has been achieved through teaching electrostatics, electrical circuits, electromagnetism and electromagnetic induction and energy transfer to IGCSE level and extending some parts of these topics to AS standard. Class discussion has encouraged students to contribute their ideas orally without fear of failure through tackling a range of closed and open questions. Written exercises outside the lessons have reinforced students’ understanding of the key ideas and given them the opportunity to write short descriptions and explanations of physical effects. All the students enjoyed using a large range of electrical and mechanical apparatus and many showed a marked improvement in their ability to select and manipulate apparatus independently. The final week’s teaching allowed students to work on more open-ended project work, planning their work and learning to use apparatus to best effect before writing up their work in the form of a poster.Individual Report:Effort: A, A Attainment: A, AJulia worked to a very high standard this summer in Physics. She was diligent, attentive and clearly very keen to do well. She carried out her practical tasks with proficiency and confidence. Her written work was always of a high standard as were her spoken answers. Julia's standard of English is excellent and she will have no difficulty with her Physics A Level studies. Well done !Julia is a determined and intelligent student who listens carefully to instructions and explanations and produces excellent written and experimental work. She is quiet during class discussion but has gradually gained in confidence in answering questions. Julia’s focused approach and detailed conceptual understanding will allow her to flourish on an A level course.PsychologyMrs Candice Thompson-Gardiner BA(Hons), PGCE, Cert TEFLThe students have received six hours of an introductory course to Psychology. In these lessons I have tried to give the students an idea of what they would study at A level. This has involved presentations on Memory, Child Development, Conformity, Obedience, Personality, and Behavourism. Within each lesson, students have been expected to take notes, contribute to discussions and read about case studies and /or experiments.Individual Report: Effort: A Attainment: AJulia is a very polite and willing student. She regularly contributes to the discussions and is keen to find out as much as she can about the subject. I feel she would be more than capable of studying Psychology at A level if she wanted to.House and Co-curricularMrs Stephanie Evans BScAll students have lived in single-sex Boarding Houses and have followed a routine based on that which they will find in most schools, with regular callovers, signing-out procedures and excellent pastoral care from British boarding staff. Each week students have attended two social activities designed to build confidence, team-building and social interaction and integration. This year the activities have included quiz nights, spaghetti bridge-building, outdoor garden games, a formal dinner and dance, a ‘History of Britain’ show, a ‘Speed-Chatting’ evening meeting British guests, a disco and karaoke evening, ten-pin bowling, and a business simulation exercise. In addition, all students have participated on stage in a performance of ‘Grease’, run by our drama teachers. We had a very informative series of Tuesday Evening Lectures, with outside speakers. Dr Paul Owen introduced students to British education, and Sarah Aitken added more information about universities, Oxford and Oxford Brookes. Alistair Anderson compressed 2000 years of British history into one hour. Kevin Redpath talked about how the Internet was helping businesses in Somerset. Dr Eigenbrot of Imperial College performed an amazing display of lasers. Nick Butler gave an excellent talk about British universities in general and Royal Holloway in particular. The series concluded with John Vick, the Headmaster of West Buckland, talking about Boarding School Life.On Sunday mornings students took part in a wide variety of club activities designed to widen their experience and introduce new skills. The clubs have included gardening, farm visits, First Aid, sewing, craft, art, bushcraft, cooking, orienteering, both jazz and hiphop dance, singing, poetry and chess. We have also taken students on one-day visits to places of cultural interest. This year we have visited Bath, the Science Museum at Bristol, the Balloon Fiesta, Oxford, the Eden Project, Longleat, Dartmoor, Exeter and Cardiff.Students have played sport five times a week, and have had experience of at least a dozen different sports. In addition to sports which are already familiar to students, we have introduced them to the rules of British school sports which they may not have encountered before, such as rugby, netball, cricket, archery, fencing and rounders. In all of the above activities, students have been under the care not only of our boarding staff but also of the 20 British Student Hosts (mostly university students) who have provided constant opportunities for them to practise their oral English and to learn to make friends with British people.Individual Report:A dedicated student who has worked very hard and often late into the evening to complete all of her work. In spite of this she has maintained a bright cheerful approach to every day and has entered fully into every aspect of the Summer course. She is a thoughtful, caring young lady and has made many new friends this Summer. I hope that she continues to enjoy her time in England.Director's Report Peter Etherton BA(Hons), MA(Lond), MA(Lanc)Julia has impressed us all with her conscientiousness and unfailing enthusiasm for new ideas and activities. During the Tuesday evening lecture series she invariably had one or two intelligent questions for the speakers, always asking her questions articulately and with quiet confidence. Julia has a great deal to offer and we look forward to hearing of her continued success at Wellington School.
