The distance from Xining, Qinghai to Lhasa, Tibet is approximately 2000 km (1240m) (I would suggest against using abbreviations: “….is approximately 2000 kilometers, or 1240 miles”. Also, the correct abbreviation is “mi” for mile).

I did not choose to travel (cover this distance) by plane, train or car; however (instead), I chose to ride (rode) my bicycle along the ongoing road. (I thought) Only in this way might I have an (delete) intimate contact with the physical nature (? This doesn’t make much sense to me).

On July the 7th, I left Canton for Xining on train T264. From the moment I departed train station (of my departure), I knew that the next few weeks held many unpredictable events for me. (You could also try, for example: On July the 7th, I departed Canton for Xning on train T264, anxious, yet excited by the unknown challenges/adversities that lay ahead)

Before the trip, I proclaimed (try a less formal word, say promised, or even declared) to my companion Yumian Deng that we would never take a car (opt for a car/opt for a ride in a car), no matter how hopeless the situation might get (however desperate the situation might get). (Here you need something to connect the sentence that follows, for example: “Sure enough, my promise / declaration was put to the test when we faced the hardship of nature for the first time, riding towards the foot of the Tanggula Mountains…”) The first time we encountered a trouble (see previous suggestion) was when I was riding toward the foot of the Tanggula Mountains on Day 12 (It might benefit the reader if you mention somewhere in the article how long this trip lasted).

There was nothing special about that morning except the breeze from the mountain
(If you wish to be more rhetoric, you could say, for example: the mopey morning greeted us with a sweet mountain breeze. Everything seemed ordinary, until I noticed the violet clouds rushing towards us from the east/west…). But I quickly noticed violet clouds rushing toward us.

(Again, I think you need something to link the sentences here, for example: The weather started to deteriorate.) The wind was blowing harder (grew stronger,) and I was constantly annoyed by whistling of the wind in my ears (it howled in our ears, endlessly pestering us).
It seemed that the noisy wind (it) would never stop (cease) unless we stopped.
We hopelessly stared (stared hopelessly) at the speedometer, distressed by our decrease in speed from 10 km/h to 5 km/h (you could be more qualitative than quantitative here, for example: …distressed by our decrease in speed to practically a grinding halt). The rain was slapping against our faces, soaking our eyelashes, and cooling down our bodies (The chilling rain slashed against our faces, blurring our visions, and soaking us in its cold wetness).
Sometimes (From time to time), we had to get down from our bikes and breathe in as much thin air as we could (stop to gasp for air).
I swore at the weather but my voice was engulfed (overwhelmed) by the howling wind; Yumian was behind me, pushing his bike (struggling with his bike). Lots of (delete) cars went (constantly sped) by at a full speed (delete), splashing water on me (us).
I constantly fantasized about (couldn’t help but imagine myself) raising my hand and asking a passing driver for help (waving at a passing driver for help).
However, I chose not to since I came there for riding not for hitchhiking (I refrained however, telling myself that I didn’t come all this way for a hitchhike).

I was so excited to see an inn beside the road (The sight of a lone inn at the side of the road brought us a major sense of relief), and used up my last thread of energy.
Finally we threw ourselves onto the sofa in the inn, too exhausted to even stretch our legs.
(using up the last ounce/thread of energy, we threw ourselves..)
I would never forget the milestone beside the inn, which distinctly wrote 3285km (First of all, as a reader with no background knowledge, I do not know what the significance of “3285km” is, so you’ll need to explain. Secondly, you could say: ….forget the milestone beside the inn. It reads: 3285km.).

Throughout our trip there was not only rain and wind but also sunshine (Our journey was plagued by rain and wind, but also blessed with sunshine and kindness).
On Day eight (be consistent: either use “day 8” or “day eight”, and stick to that notation), riding my bicycle across the Kunlun Mountain with an average altitude of more than 4000m, I was continually shocked by the naked mountains (as we were traversing the Kunlun Mountains at an altitude of over 4000 meters, marvelling at all its naked grandeur,)
Suddenly, a car stopped and a man stepped out (a car suddenly stopped by us and a man stepped out:) “You guys must be thirsty, come on, here are cups of water.
Take the cups with you.”
It was the first time I received a present (it’s not really a present, you could say: it was the first time I was offered such kindness from a stranger) from a stranger.

“Thank you” were the only words I could think of. He drove ahead for several meters (delete) but stopped again. To my (our) surprise, he came back, waving goodbye to Yumian, and me (us) and disappeared (before disappearing) around the corner.
I suddenly realized that he drove for several miles just to bring us the water, which moved me a lot. (You could say: I was nearly brought to tears by the sudden revelation that he drove for miles just to bring us water)

My journey was (had been) like a roller coaster (ride).
Sometimes I was (At times, I would be so) excited (thrilled) to reach the peak and race down the mountain; other times (then,) I felt (would feel so) completely alone while (delete) riding my bike (delete) through the bleak desert.
But I was always getting closer and closer to Lhasa. This never changed. As I was (delete) approaching (nearing) the end (my destination), I fantasized about entering the gates of Lhasa, but also feared the end (but a part of me also feared the end).

Encountering (standing in) a modern city with(surrounded by/amidst the) neon light, edifices, (delete comma) and taxis,I could not believe that the trip (journey: note the difference between trip and journey: journey is more appropriate when it comes to describing “trips” that cover extraordinary distances that last for days. It’s also more appropriate as a metaphor for life) was indeed over.
Somehow (bad choice of word, consider deletion), I suddenly realized that life (itself)
is like a journey.
We set goals up one after another and rushed to the destination (set our goals, and are often all t
oo eager to rush towards the next milestone).
But I prefer to (I’d rather) enjoy (savour/relish) the trip (journey) itself.
During the journey, I suffered a lot: burning sun and
heavy rain, bleak desert and naked mountains, boring daytime and freezing evenings.. Also, I felt the trust between strangers and the firm friendship. (first of all, since you’re drawing a
direct analogy between your journey to Lhasa and the journey of life, you can make it ambiguous as to which of these
two you’re referring to in this sentence. I would suggest something like: “The trials and tribulations we must endure, and
the friendships and bonds we forge along the way are what define us as individuals (you can add “shape our souls” or whatnot here as well), not the final destination, let us all enjoy the ride.” – then you can delete everything after this.)

Just letting you know I’v received yet another graduate award this year. Unlike the award I received last year (which was within the physics and astronomy department), this one is
university-wide. Basically it means I am one of the two best Chinese students, as determined by the graduate award committee. I have NO idea how this is even possible. I'm not even doing impressive work. UVic have no standards.

+Topic: Do we really benefit from every event or experience in some way?

Fortune, glorious careers and glamorous lifestyles (glory and glamour) are what
we have been dreaming about (most/many of us dream about). However, with the inference of the capricious fate, we do encounter obstacles and challenges from time to time (never know what obstacles and challenges lie ahead of us). Nonetheless, we should still have (always maintain) an optimistic attitude towards life because to some degree, every event or experience is beneficial.

Mrs. Voynich’s novel The Gadfly serves as a typical example to illustrate my point.
The experience of Arthur, the main character (protagonist) of the novel fully reveals what (exemplifies what the) unpredictable fate may bring to a man, what sufferings he may go through (endure) and what kind of brand-new person he may become after all this adversary (the brand new person/soul that that may/might/can be reborn from this adversity). As a carefree young man who had (was brought up by?) an affable and father-like priest and (with) many close friends, Arthur used to lead a peaceful life. Unfortunately, after his (delete) joining the secret organization of which the purpose was to emancipate Italy, his motherland, misfortunes happened to (befell) him one by one (after another). When
suffering from the betrayal of one of his comrades (of his comrade) and the misunderstanding of his beloved girl, (delete) Gemma, Arthur also got shocked to learn that his respectable priest was his biological father (learned the shocking news that the priest was in fact his biological father). Desperate and heart-broken, he left his hometown alone, leaving an illusion that he had committed suicide. However, instead of being knocked down by this torturing experience (the crucible), Arthur grew into a mature and (matured into a) hard-minded fighter (warrior) for the freedom of his country. By using the pseudonym “Gadfly”, he violently and incisively (repeated use of similar adverbs) condemned the sin (sins) and hypocrisy of the Catholic Church, for he deeply knew from his own experience that what (the) misery (hardships of) the people of Italy were going through (Italian people). It was hardly probable for him to become such a determined warrior and skillful satirist without all these miserable events (enduring the trials in his life).

Apart from in the literature world, this conclusion is equally applicable in the reality (This conclusion is equally applicable in reality or: This conclusion is equally applicable in life outside of the literature world). On May 12th 2008, an unprecedented (devastating (not unprecedented - Tangshan earthquake)) earthquake hit Wenchuan County in Sichuan, China. Indeed, it caused disastrous consequences to the residents there (delete), but on the other hand, it undoubtedly aroused (evoked) the sincere sympathy, selfless aid and national solidarity of the Chinese people. In spite of the potential dangers in the disaster areas, the leader of the Chinese government, the soldiers from the PLA and the brave volunteers went there with dispatch (? Consider deletion), thus (delete) saving thousands of victims who were trapped in those areas (under debris). Without this sort of difficult experience, a government wouldn’t (would not) have (the) chance to learn how to deal with such difficulties; a nation wouldn’t (would not) have the courage and ability to form solid unity (unite together to face/unite under) to go through the hard times (the hardship).

In conclusion, even those events and experiences that seem to be tormenting may have positive effects on our future life (lives). Anything can be beneficial if we treat them seriously and optimistically.

School Report

English for Education A-level Preparation Course
held at  Wellington School, Somerset
10 July – 3 September 2006

Course Report for: (真实姓名隐去), Julia

General: The Etherton Education A-level Preparation Course at Wellington School is an intensive, eight-week academic summer course designed to give overseas students the best possible preparation before they commence their A-levels in Britain. Students study General and Social English, English for Academic Purposes, English through Drama and choose from a range of other subjects including Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics/Business Studies, Geography, Psychology and Art. We also introduce western manners, over twelve different sports, a wide range of social activities and eight main cultural visits, as well as Sunday clubs. British Teachers and British Student Hosts run the programme, which has an overall staff-student ratio below 1:3.  The main purpose of the course is to produce students who are confident and relaxed in British Boarding Schools.

A note on the content of this report:
In each section of the report the first part outlines the work covered in class by all the students and the second part comments on the individual student. Each student also receives overall grades for effort and attainment.

Should you have any further queries please contact Etherton Education

Art                Mrs Clare Schmidt BA(Hons), PGCE

The first part of the course introduced pupils to different ways of drawing. They were able to experiment with a range of media including pencil, fine line pen, charcoal, wax crayons and ink. In their sketchbooks pupils researched fruit, flowers and plants working both from first hand observation and printed images. Pupils were then introduced to “Art Nouveau” and asked to focus on one artist of their choice linked to this style of art. They were encouraged to make critical responses in their sketchbooks. This was followed by design work inspired by their initial drawings and their chosen artist and led to the completion of a final collage. All students took part in an Art Exhibition at the end of term.

Individual Report:
Effort: A, A                            Attainment: A, A

Julia has worked with enthusiasm and motivation throughout the eight weeks. She is clearly committed to the subject and works with great care and consideration. She has good drawing skills and has produced some inventive and imaginative design work. She should make an excellent candidate for A Level Art.

Drama
Miss Zoe Markham BA(Hons), PGCE
Mr Matthew Burke BA, TESL

During the course of the class we did a number of things. First, we learned the basics of Drama – i.e. what is Drama, what makes a good actor/actress, rules to follow, things to know etc. Second, we did numerous activities, games, icebreakers etc. This experience gave the students much needed practice and an introduction to Drama, while keeping it in a fun atmosphere as it gave them self-confidence and enhanced and toned their acting skills. Third, we started rehearsing and preparing for the performance of “Grease”.

Individual Report:
Effort: A, A                            Attainment: A, A

Julia is an amazing student. It has been a great pleasure to teach her. Her self-confidence in her English level certainly found their way into Drama. Julia was always eager and willing to take part in activities during class time. With a perfect attendance in class and rehearsal time Julia has clearly gone above and beyond my expectations for this course.

English
Mr Henry Wilson Cert TESOL

There have been two main purposes to the English lessons that I have taught. Although an effort has been made to try and cover both purposes in one lesson topic this has not always been possible due to the differences in subject matter.
The first aim was to prepare the students for the IELTS examination, which they may be taking in the future. This embraces the four papers – Speaking, Listening, Academic Writing and Academic Reading. We have covered the techniques required to achieve successful marks when the time comes. I have stressed the need to develop and practice the strategies outlined in the text book we used – Focus on IELTS by Sue O’Connell – and to continue with them throughout their English studies.
The second, and equally important, purpose was to prepare the students for their studies at the English schools that they will be graduating to in the autumn. We have naturally concentrated on the aspects of the English language and vocabulary with which they may be unfamiliar and in this respect we have spent time developing their awareness of collocations, phrasal verbs, synonyms and common colloquialisms. I have tried to use material which gives an insight into life in the United Kingdom and this has involved using texts covering such diverse subjects as Elvis Presley, William Shakespeare, MTV, the Titanic and the Gunpowder Plot.
The class has generally been polite, industrious and keen to learn. I hope that they will enjoy life at their new schools.

Individual Report:
Effort: B, B                            Attainment: A, B

Julia has a sensible and intelligent attitude to her work and has been keen to learn. Her written work has always been well presented and punctual and her contributions to classroom work have been constructive and well considered. She has a good grasp of all the different aspects of the English language and applies them well. Her interest in English literature will enable her to benefit from the opportunities afforded to her at her new school.

Mathematics
Mr Stuart Gifford BSc, PGCE

Pre-‘A’- Level Mathematics

In this course we have studied :
number work from integers to rational and irrational numbers and computational aspects involving fractions, decimals and percentages;
statistical topics including averages, frequencies and cumulative frequencies, time series and moving averages, correlation, variance and standard deviation;
probability;
geometry and trigonometry;
graphical work and vectors;
some aspects of differentiation.

Individual Report:
Effort: A, A                            Attainment: A-, A-

Julia has contributed well in class and has worked hard to achieve a high level of understanding of the topics studied. She has the potential to do well at ‘A’ Level.

Physics
Mr Christopher Lennox-Hilton BSc(Hons), AKC, PGCE
Dr Paul Owen MA, PhD

Physics lessons have focused on developing practical and investigative skills and on improving students’ grasp of technical vocabulary. This has been achieved through teaching electrostatics, electrical circuits, electromagnetism and electromagnetic induction and energy transfer to IGCSE level and extending some parts of these topics to AS standard. Class discussion has encouraged students to contribute their ideas orally without fear of failure through tackling a range of closed and open questions. Written exercises outside the lessons have reinforced students’ understanding of the key ideas and given them the opportunity to write short descriptions and explanations of physical effects. All the students enjoyed using a large range of electrical and mechanical apparatus and many showed a marked improvement in their ability to select and manipulate apparatus independently. The final week’s teaching allowed students to work on more open-ended project work, planning their work and learning to use apparatus to best effect before writing up their work in the form of a poster.

Individual Report:
Effort: A, A                            Attainment: A, A

Julia worked to a very high standard this summer in Physics. She was diligent, attentive and clearly very keen to do well. She carried out her practical tasks with proficiency and confidence. Her written work was always of a high standard as were her spoken answers. Julia's standard of English is excellent and she will have no difficulty with her Physics A Level studies. Well done !

Julia is a determined and intelligent student who listens carefully to instructions and explanations and produces excellent written and experimental work. She is quiet during class discussion but has gradually gained in confidence in answering questions. Julia’s focused approach and detailed conceptual understanding will allow her to flourish on an A level course.

Psychology
Mrs Candice Thompson-Gardiner BA(Hons), PGCE, Cert TEFL

The students have received six hours of an introductory course to Psychology.
In these lessons I have tried to give the students an idea of what they would study at A level. This has involved presentations on Memory, Child Development, Conformity, Obedience, Personality, and Behavourism. Within each lesson, students have been expected to take notes, contribute to discussions and read about case studies and /or experiments.

Individual Report:
Effort: A                                Attainment: A

Julia is a very polite and willing student. She regularly contributes to the discussions and is keen to find out as much as she can about the subject. I feel she would be more than capable of studying Psychology at A level if she wanted to.

House and Co-curricular
Mrs Stephanie Evans BSc

All students have lived in single-sex Boarding Houses and have followed a routine based on that which they will find in most schools, with regular callovers, signing-out procedures and excellent pastoral care from British boarding staff.

Each week students have attended two social activities designed to build confidence, team-building and social interaction and integration. This year the activities have included quiz nights, spaghetti bridge-building, outdoor garden games, a formal dinner and dance, a ‘History of Britain’ show, a ‘Speed-Chatting’ evening meeting British guests, a disco and karaoke evening, ten-pin bowling, and a business simulation exercise. In addition, all students have participated on stage in a performance of ‘Grease’, run by our drama teachers.

We had a very informative series of Tuesday Evening Lectures, with outside speakers. Dr Paul Owen introduced students to British education, and Sarah Aitken added more information about universities, Oxford and Oxford Brookes. Alistair Anderson compressed 2000 years of British history into one hour. Kevin Redpath talked about how the Internet was helping businesses in Somerset. Dr Eigenbrot of Imperial College performed an amazing display of lasers. Nick Butler gave an excellent talk about British universities in general and Royal Holloway in particular. The series concluded with John Vick, the Headmaster of West Buckland, talking about Boarding School Life.

On Sunday mornings students took part in a wide variety of club activities designed to widen their experience and introduce new skills. The clubs have included gardening, farm visits, First Aid, sewing, craft, art, bushcraft, cooking, orienteering, both jazz and hiphop dance, singing, poetry and chess.

We have also taken students on one-day visits to places of cultural interest. This year we have visited Bath, the Science Museum at Bristol, the Balloon Fiesta, Oxford, the Eden Project, Longleat, Dartmoor, Exeter and Cardiff.

Students have played sport five times a week, and have had experience of at least a dozen different sports. In addition to sports which are already familiar to students, we have introduced them to the rules of British school sports which they may not have encountered before, such as rugby, netball, cricket, archery, fencing and rounders.

In all of the above activities, students have been under the care not only of our boarding staff but also of the 20 British Student Hosts (mostly university students) who have provided constant opportunities for them to practise their oral English and to learn to make friends with British people.

Individual Report:

A dedicated student who has worked very hard and often late into the evening to complete all of her work. In spite of this she has maintained a bright cheerful approach to every day and has entered fully into every aspect of the Summer course. She is a thoughtful, caring young lady and has made many new friends this Summer. I hope that she continues to enjoy her time in England.

Director's Report
Peter Etherton BA(Hons), MA(Lond), MA(Lanc)

Julia has impressed us all with her conscientiousness and unfailing enthusiasm for new ideas and activities. During the Tuesday evening lecture series she invariably had one or two intelligent questions for the speakers, always asking her questions articulately and with quiet confidence. Julia has a great deal to offer and we look forward to hearing of her continued success at Wellington School.

Julia
